One of Dahlia's friends, Indie, asked her mum for a new 'room' for her birthday. When she told me about it, I offered to help as I absolutely love designing rooms! When Indie said her theme was pink and gold I think I squealed in delight!
The priorities for the room included a very large desk with storage as Indie loves her arts and crafts, a reading corner, and plenty of storage. The trickiest part was making sure the space was designed well to fit the larger items. There was also a couple of doors that were not being used that needed to be hidden. So we put pen to paper and tried many different options before landing on the best one to maximise the space.
The budget was $1,000 which had to include everything as we were starting from scratch. At first I thought this might be a challenge, however we were able to find functional yet gorgeous items at good prices. We chose the more economical option of wall stickers as opposed to wallpaper. We invested in the furniture pieces and saved on the styling decor items.
The desk is actually quite big but it is perfect for Indie to use with her friends (Dahlia included!!) for arts, crafts and games. We decided to include two stools for this reason, and at $29 each in a beautiful soft pink velvet why not (thanks Kmart!)!! The two drawers in the desk surprisingly managed to fit all of Indie's ever-growing Smiggle pencil cases and note pads.
The reading corner is super cosy and Indie loves curling up in there. We used a round rug, topped with another fluffy rug and heaps of cushions to make sure it is nice and comfy. The canopy from Adairs is a beautiful white semi-sheer fabric with gold spots, and the book shelves we bought from Ikea were the perfect size to fit under the window.
Storage was really important and so we bought 2 sets of drawers to effectively store Indie's clothes, accessories and some toys. The top of the drawers function as a dresser and we added a mirror on top. We also purchased some gorgeous pink rattan baskets for extra toys and bags.
The bed was a DIY project, and oh boy, when I saw the 'before' I did wonder how on earth we were going to make it work. But Indie's parents did an incredible job restoring and painting it and it now looks amazing! The bedside table, which Dahlia also has, is one of my favourite pieces. It has a touch of gold, beautiful chevron detail and the storage is very functional.
